ASUS Eee PC T91 confirmed for late May or early June release in the UK.

ASUS Eee PC T91 confirmed for late May or early June release in the UK
We've seen plenty of the ASUS Eee PC T91 ever since its first appearance back at CES in January, but now, according to Electric Pig, the swivel tableted, touchscreen-boasting Eee PC has been confirmed by ASUS for a "late May or early June" release in the UK. Sadly, there's still no further word (beyond its April appearance at the FCC) for a Stateside release, but the UK model is expected to retail for £449 (about $685) when it launches there. We'll just have to be patient, we suppose.

RSS: Really Stupendous Software

Thanks for the heads-up on the new FeedDemon 2.0 beta Chris. Agreed, Microsoft doesn't have a grip on RSS yet so they will miss out.

Link: RSS: Really Stupendous Software (Chris Pirillo).

Methinks Nick Bradbury has redefined what RSS stands for - with his release of the first FeedDemon 2.0 beta. I, for one, would request that Nick not leave the house until he's finished coding that thing. I've already sent him a lengthy list of bugs and suggestions, and he's always listened to my feed(demon)back in the past. I've been a NewsGator user from the beginning, but I can forsee myself finally leaping from the Outlook client to a standalone reader - FeedDemon 2.0. Let me see how Nick responds to my list of "must haves" and feature suggestions - and then I'll make up my mind. Wow. Someone'll buy NewsGator based on this program alone. Ten to one says Google bites first (because Microsoft still doesn't understand how much promise this company holds).

tekniaXP News - Why I Yahoo and Why You Should Yahoo Too

You really should...

Yahoo has cool titles for the people that work there; like Chief Yahoo and Technical Yahoo.

Seriously, I examined why I use Yahoo stuff and was amazed at how Yahoo software effects my tech life. The convenience factor comes into play, ease of use, shared calendars and peace of mind for quality apps that generally play well with others. This post grew from what I originally intended; just a heads-up about Yahoo to more of a review.

Yahoo also gets my vote for one of the Top 5 booths at CES 2006. The Yahoo 'tent house' showed off some home automation and cool stuff we'll get soon.

'Goodbye' RSS

Good points, not really goodbye; just transparent.

Link: PC Magazine

By Lance Ulanoff

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is on the cusp of the best kind of sea change for a technology acronym: It's about to become obsolete. No, RSS is not going anywhere. In fact, it's exploding, and because it's reaching such a high level of visibility and Internet and desktop integration, the term "RSS" will soon no longer be needed. This is a good thing, but with this realization came the awareness that an entire key market sector is ignoring the technology, and it's the one that could perhaps benefit the most.

Let me digress a bit to talk about why RSS is making this transition. First of all, it's everywhere. It's on your desktop in feed readers, browsers like Firefox, and now desktop search utilities like Google Desktop 2.0. Soon it'll be an integral part of your desktop thanks to Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 and Windows Vista. We also find it in customizable homepages like MyYahoo!. And with each passing day, it becomes easier to add RSS feeds. You can choose them from simple lists in Yahoo!, and your feed readers and desktop search utilities will autodiscover available ones right off Web sites.

How to Hack RSS and Atom Feeds

Link: Extreme Tech

This article is an excerpt from the ExtremeTech book Hacking RSS and Atom.
This feature explains what RSS and Atom feeds are and how you can build
an aggregator, route feeds to your inbox and buddy list, subscribe to
multimedia content, and more.

What are RSS and Atom feeds? If you're reading this, then it's pretty likely you've already seen links to feeds (things such as "Syndicate this Site" or the ubiquitous orange-and-white "RSS" buttons) starting to pop up on all of your favorite sites. In fact, you might already have secured a feed reader or aggregator and stopped visiting most of your favorite sites in person. The bookmarks in your browser have started gathering dust since you stopped clicking through them every day. And, if you're like some feed addicts, you're keeping track of what's new from more Web sites and news sources than you ever have before, or even thought possible.

Intelligent Email Marketing™

Link: IntelliContact

by Ryan P M Allis
According to a study by the Winterberry Group, email marketing brings in $15.50 per dollar spent . This is about 17% more than direct-mail campaigns and 73% more than telemarketing campaigns. In short, email marketing matters and if you’re not sending out at least monthly email newsletters to your subscriber base, you should be. The true cost comes from acquiring the prospects and clients, not the three or four hours needed to create a monthly newsletter.

Many organizations, once they have spent the thousands of dollars acquiring their clients, fail to market to their existing base. I’ve met quite a few marketing managers who would rather continue spending $200 a pop for new qualified prospects rather than $0.01 per person to build the relationship with their existing clients and recommend new products or encourage re-orders. I’ve found that sending relevant email communications to persons who have requested to receive them is the single most effective way of cultivating the type of relationship needed to turn your prospects into customers and your customers into lifetime product evangelizers.

How Wiki Works

Link: The New York Times> Pogues Posts

Published: February 8, 2005

I'd heard of the Wikipedia, but I'd never quite understood it. It's supposed to be a free online encyclopedia, written and edited by EVERYBODY. A collaborative worldwide effort, in other words, with 469,700 articles so far.

It sounds like a cool idea, but I just never understood how it could work. In this age of viruses, spyware and other rampant software vandalism, how could such a thing survive? What would stop antisocial jerks from sabotaging the good work of everyone else?

I finally got a clue when I saw this. It's a movie, narrated by Infoworld blogger Jon Udell, that tracks the life cycle of one particular Wikipedia entry. It's fairy long, but it gives a dazzling time-lapse view of how the whole Wiki thing works.

RSS (an acronym for "Rich Site Summary" and later coined "Really Simple Syndication") is a way for web sites to summarize their content, such as news articles, to make it available in a different view.

For example, Yahoo News (RSS) headlines can be viewed like bookmarks in Firefox or viewed like email in Thunderbird.

Many web sites generate RSS feeds such as the BBC News (RSS), Yahoo News (RSS), and your favorite Blog - blogteknia.us, teknia tech and this one: blogworX. RSS comes in many flavors, including RSS 0.9, RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0, and Atom -- and Mozilla Firefox supports them all.

You can find many RSS feeds at: Technorati, Feedster, and Syndic8.com

Introduction to RSS - WebReference.com

Link: Introduction to RSS

Want more traffic? An easy way to distribute your news? Then you need an RSS news feed. To start all you need is content you want broadcast, and one RSS text file.

What is RSS?
Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is a lightweight XML format designed for sharing headlines and other Web content. Think of it as a distributable "What's New" for your site. Originated by UserLand in 1997 and subsequently used by Netscape to fill channels for Netcenter, RSS has evolved into a popular means of sharing content between sites (including the BBC, CNET, CNN, Disney, Forbes, Motley Fool, Wired, Red Herring, Salon, Slashdot, ZDNet, and more). RSS solves myriad problems webmasters commonly face, such as increasing traffic, and gathering and distributing news. RSS can also be the basis for additional content distribution services.

RSS Syntax
RSS defines an XML grammar (a set of HTML-like tags) for sharing news. Each RSS text file contains both static information about your site, plus dynamic information about your new stories, all surrounded by matching start and end tags.

Sales Force Automation

Sales Force Automation

Sales Force Automation

Want to wind up your sales people and get them marching in step? Sales force automation (SFA) builds those mundane tasks into a streamlined machine, ready-made to pump up the sales volume. Whether it's contact management, sales forecasting, order or inventory issues, a good sales force automation system helps keep that machine humming. While some folks confuse sales force automation with customer relationship management (CRM), there are clear differences. Nevertheless, SFA surely overlaps with CRM ...

Josh Berlin, 27, already considered himself a fan of Frontier Airlines. Then he encountered some of its pitchmen: Jack the Rabbit, Larry the Lynx and Grizwald the Bear.

The talking animals on Frontier's TV ads - a takeoff on the images of wild creatures on the tails of its jets - made him like the discounter even more and want to fly it more often.

Since the pioneering public school opened last year, however, a bit of youthful reality has confounded the technology evangelists and educational theorists behind the Evergreen program. Teenagers, it seems, often break things.

RSS Tutorial for Content Publishers and Webmasters

RSS Tutorial for Content Publishers and Webmasters

Introducing RSS

Think about all of the information that you access on the Web on a day-to-day basis; news headlines, search results, "What's New", job vacancies, and so forth. A large amount of this content can be thought of as a list; although it probably isn't in HTML

  • elements, the information is list-oriented.

Most people need to track a number of these lists, but it becomes difficult once there are more than a handful of sources. This is because they have to go to each page, load it, remember how it's formatted, and find where they last left off in the list.

RSS is an XML-based format that allows the syndication of lists of hyperlinks, along with other information, or metadata, that helps viewers decide whether they want to follow the link.

RSS allows peoples' computers to fetch and understand the information, so that all of the lists they're interested in can be tracked and personalized for them. It is a format that's intended for use by computers on behalf of people, rather than being directly presented to them (like HTML).
To enable this, a Web site will make an RSS feed, or channel, available, just like any other file or resource on the server. Once a feed is available, computers can regularly fetch the file to get the most recent items on the list. Most often, people will do this

RSS - The Next Killer App For Education

RSS - The Next Killer App For Education

    From The Technology Source
    by Mary Harrsch

Like many technology specialists, I have been looking for the next "killer app" for quite some time. I define a killer application as a program that gives average people the capability to use technology to solve everyday problems and enrich their lives. E-mail was the first killer app. Its usefulness has been demonstrated clearly by its being embraced across the entire spectrum of computer users.
Now a new technology, rich site summary (RSS)—sometimes known as "really simple syndication"—takes the communication paradigm of one-to-one messaging one step further. RSS is a tag-based formatting language like HTML; it gives users the ability to communicate information to anyone who may be interested in a particular topic. Personal Web pages already allow for the same broad contact, but with its emphasis on dynamic content, efficient delivery, and targeted distribution, RSS represents a crucial advance.
Imagine having the news that interests you automatically delivered to your desktop, or being alerted to updates on your favorite Web sites without visiting them first. Picture yourself as a news provider to specific people who share your interests or just appreciate your commentary. Most commonly used to support the publication of weblogs and Internet news sites, RSS is an important development that promises to have a substantial impact on the world of education.

Soople; easy search in Google. Advanced calculator

Soople; easy search in Google. Advanced calculator

    Soople-easy expert search-

Soople is an early English dialect, which means 'to soften, make supple'.

That's exactly what I envisioned for this site ; a site that softens all the fantastic (advanced) functions Google offers. Initially I made this site for my mother, who, though computer-savvy, still didn't know about all the possibilities Google offers. This site is therefore meant for all those who are not yet familiar with all the functions and required syntaxes. This way Soople enables an 'easy expert search'!

For instance, one can specify a search by one particuliar site or filetype ( word, excel, powerpoint and pdf) or an imagesearch by size and type.

Furthermore there are many useful tools Google offers; search in the latest news, look up definitions or use Google as a phonebook.

And last but not least, the Calculator. This amazing tool lets you do all kind of (very advanced) calculations. Soople has added the unit-converter, which is based on this calculator, for the conversion of all the commmon units/measures (meters<--->yards). Quite supple, if you ask me.

Of course, there are always many more supple ideas out there, so don't hesitate to mail us! Have a lot of Google-fun

Soople is in no way affiliated with or endorsed by Google

You’ve seen my writings about the recent Google update, referred to around the internet as “Florida”.
In that recent update, many websites that ranked highly for their various search terms, fell to all time lows. Many went from the top of Page One to Page Ten. Many were lost from the Google listings entirely.
While many of the banished sites have bounced back a little, most have not recovered their former lofty status.
Don’t let that disaster happen to you.
One thing that will always help to maintain your position, on the search engine results, is good solid content.
As bloggers, we are constantly adding fresh new material to our sites on a daily basis. Many of you update several times a day, with multiple posts. That will only stand you in good stead with the search engines.
Because of the constantly updated nature of blogs, most of them came through the controversial Florida update in very good shape.
With the new Google algorithm (it’s the mathematical program that calculates where your site should be placed in the search returns) currently in place, you and your blog can possibly do even better!
Be sure to use your chosen keywords (the terms that people use in searches that find your site)

Blog News for Bloggers :: RSS - How it can Help your Blog

RSS - How it can Help your Blog [ Blog Promotion ]

RSS feeds can be beneficial to your blog. What is RSS? RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and is a method pioneered by Netscape.com to deliver news headlines to it’s portal. If a site has an RSS feed, any user with an RSS Reader can subscribe to that feed. The feed then delivers headlines and short excerpts of each article posted on that website with a direct link to the article to read more. Many news sites offer RSS feeds. News sites have found this useful as there is no schedule to follow - you report on news as it happens. Thus users do not need to browse the site periodically for new stories, instead they are alerted to them as they are published. Because the user is using a special tool to read the updates, then it is not clogging up their mailbox or distracting them from other tasks - the user is in the mindset of wanting to read new posts or articles. Apply this to Blogs which are often updated on an ad-hoc basis, it prevents users from visiting your blog several times only to discover there are no new posts - chances are that they won’t return to your site, and you have lost a user. Even the most dilligent of bloggers that post on a daily basis will have some kind of hiatus - illness, vacation,

Web Development Version Control with CVS

SitePoint's Open Source blogger Blane Warrene covers a favourite subject of mine, version control (am I a geek or what?)

When multiple developers work on a single copy of a project's files, conflicts inevitably arise, as one developer might unknowingly overwrite the changes of another. Additionally, when a change is made permanent and is later discovered to cause problems, it can be frustratingly difficult to undo that change.

Version control solves both of these problems, by managing a central repository of a project's code. Developers work on local copies of their own and then submit their changes to the repository, which keeps a record of those changes and also manages any conflicts that may arise.

CVS has been the longtime leader in this field, and is an extremely mature open source product. SitePoint even has an article that describes in greater detail how to use CVS to track changes to Web development projects.

CVS tends to be best suited to managing text files, however, and Web projects tend to include quite a few images. Some of the comments to Blane's blog entry point out some newcomers, like Subversion, which may be better suited to Web development.

Inspired designs: Award-class auto industry Web sites that work
    by Joe Dysart

An array of new tools brings world-class Web sites within everyone’s reach.

Now that the Web as revolutionary business communication tool is a fait accompli, a number of businesses in the auto industry have discovered ways to elevate the medium to world-class heights, and create glistening icons of e-commerce.

Seasoned Web designers say that sites achieving this status realize that a Web site is much more than a “flag of the Net” or a “billboard in cyberspace.” Instead, the best Web sites create inviting, easy to use environments: an interactive tool where prospective and existing clients can learn about your business, and actually begin to transact business – at least on a limited scale.

What a Web site is not is a technological homage to yourself, your company or the Web designer who helped you put the site together. Technological homages – or showy, forever-to-download sites that “look so cool” but are little more than severe impediments to e-commerce — are still too common on the Web. The Webscape is littered with such sites. Don’t add yours to the heap.

“Usability rules the Web,” says Jakob Nielson, a principal in the Nielsen Norman Group (www.nngroup.com), a Web design consultancy. “The Web is the ultimate customer-empowering environment. He or she who clicks the mouse gets to decide everything. It is so easy to go elsewhere; all the competitors in the world are but a mouse-click away.”

    RSS Rocks

    RSS Rocks

In a nutshell, this article rocks! By Lance Ulanoff - PC Mag
    March 10, 2004

I'm hooked on Really Simple Syndication (RSS), but it hasn't always been this way. Over the last year or so, while we slowly built a list of RSS feeds for the PCMag.com Web site, I continually scratched my head and wondered, "What's the point?"

RSS technology is a result of the growth of XML and its ease of use. It allows Webmasters to produce XML news feeds for their sites easily. Those who run reader software can subscribe to and read the feeds. I understood how RSS worked. What I didn't get was who would see the feeds, why they would read them, and what they would do with the links.

I was having a hard time separating my feeling about RSS from the bad memories I still have from the Web's first dance with push technology, PointCast.

The case for adding streaming video to your company Web site is a powerful one. Today, over 50 million Americans use a broadband connection and, as a result, demand a complete Web experience. Specifically, Web site visitors want multimedia. If your company Web site doesn't offer multimedia, users will probably surf elsewhere.

Building a business case for streaming video
It shouldn't be difficult to build a business case for adding multimedia such as streaming video to your company site. A number of major companies, including Cisco Systems, General Motors, and Bausch & Lomb, have found success.

    TrackBack Explanation: from movabletype.org

    What Is TrackBack?

    A Beginner's Guide

In a nutshell, TrackBack was designed to provide a method of notification between websites: it is a method of person A saying to person B, "This is something you may be interested in." To do that, person A sends a TrackBack ping to person B.

    AvantGo

Distribute web or blog info to your Palm using AvantGo (a free on-line service)

I added news feeds for my palm computer from my blog, the c2c blog and my clients blog in about 2 minutes from avantgo.com after I created an account. These channels are easy to setup in "My AvantGo"

The free account is pretty generous, allowing me to get my fix of geek news and 2 clients weblog articles in addition to my own blog.

The on-line program gathers the site info, formats it for the Palm and loads the updates to my Palm when I sync it, so any new stuff posted loads into my Palm for viewing later.

    Very nice!
