TomTom sorry for giving customer driving data to cops
'Anonymous' info used to set speed traps By Dan Goodin in San Francisco
City of Los Angeles Case Study Navigation device maker TomTom has apologized for supplying driving data collected from customers to police to use in catching speeding motorists. The data, including historical speed, has been sold to local and regional governments in the Netherlands to help police set speed traps, Dutch newspaper AD reported here, with a Google translation here.
As more smartphones offer GPS navigation service, TomTom has been forced to compensate for declining profit by increasing sales in other areas, including the selling of traffic data.
Behind the scenes: GPS reporting was probably configured to send alerts when the vehicles started and when the vehicles moved. Inline vehicle tracking would show where the vehicles stopped and ended up.

A stolen service truck led San Antonio police to an illegal stolen-goods route to Mexico.
The Miner Corporation reported a
theft from their north-side warehouse building early Wednesday morning:
more than $10,000 in tools, including five welding units and a work
truck.
What the thieves didn’t know was that the truck had a GPS tracking device in it.
David Janssen of Miner Corporation said: “We can tell when the
truck was started, where it went and where it stopped, and it was
stopped at this location about 1 a.m. for about 20 minutes, apparently
to unload it, then it was dumped in another portion of town.”
The company called police, who quickly got a search warrant for the home in the 1100 block of Pecan Valley.
That’s where detectives found not just the welders, but hundreds
of items: televisions, power-washers, even a wheelchair. Many of those
goods were also reported stolen. Detectives believe the address is a
halfway house for a black-market operation.
Luis Rodriguez Sr. was booked on felony theft charges.
“It’s my understanding that’s what this guy does; he buys stolen
property, particularly welders, and takes them by the trailer-full to
Mexico,” Detective James Caviness said.
Besides the stolen property, police instructed Animal Care
Services to take custody of two dogs and 30 chickens illegally kept on
the property.
The smallest GPS tracker in its class features a new and improved GPS receiver with up to seven times more sensitivity than any other Trackstick model.
The detachable weatherproof and shock resistant case, magnetic mount and small 3 1/2 inch figure make the Trackstick Mini ideal for covert deployment and use in harsh conditions.

The Trackstick Mini continuously records its exact route, stop times, speed, direction, altitude, and other valuable information, which can be quickly downloaded and viewed on your computer. The integrated temperature recorder ensures that all aspects of its environment are being monitored. A vibration detector, combined with proprietary low-power GPS technology makes Trackstick Mini the longest running GPS tracker on the market.
Best of all, changing batteries is no longer required. The Trackstick Mini runs on a built-in lithium-ion battery that can be recharged in about an hour through your computer's USB port.
